Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
