The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently research projected his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more slowly, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically absolutely not the account of a mighty king appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover as well.
The evident and clear truth that Christ from scripture requests a form of profound affection concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the persistent defiance against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the finest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected through connection to that which renders it unique and magnificent, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it imply pretending the worst about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a blend that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
